If you’re looking for a weekend getaway in Ontario that combines waterfront views, incredible food, outdoor adventures, and a walkable downtown, Point Edward and Sarnia deserve a spot on your list. Located on the Canada–U.S. border where Ontario meets Michigan, these neighbouring communities sit along the beautiful St. Clair River, connected by the iconic Blue Water Bridge. Aaron and I spent a weekend exploring the area, and it reminded us that some of Ontario’s best destinations are the ones that pleasantly surprise you.
Stay at Four Points by Sheraton Point Edward Sarnia
We checked into the Four Points by Sheraton Point Edward Sarnia, located directly beside the Blue Water Bridge. The hotel was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. What we loved most was the location. We could easily walk to the waterfront, restaurants, and nearby attractions, making it easy to explore without constantly hopping in the car.
Dinner at GRIND Kitchen & Bar
Our first evening started with a stroll along the waterfront before settling in at GRIND Kitchen & Bar. Between the river views, live music, and welcoming atmosphere, it felt like the perfect way to kick off the weekend.
I ordered the Chicken Supreme, which balanced sweet maple flavours with savoury notes, while Aaron chose the beef tenderloin gnocchi special. His dish had lots of fresh rosemary! We shared the chicken tempura to start and, naturally, couldn’t resist dessert. Crème brûlée for me, a chocolate peanut butter brownie for Aaron… but of course, we shared both.
After dinner, we wandered back toward the hotel to catch sunset beneath the Blue Water Bridge. We lucked out because there happened to be a vintage car show with more than 200 classic cars, live music, and people filling the waterfront. The whole area was buzzing with great energy, making an already beautiful sunset even more memorable.
Paddleboarding, Downtown Sarnia & Local Finds
The next morning we launched our paddleboards from Centennial Park. If you’re bringing your own paddleboard or kayak, this launch couldn’t be easier. There are two parking lots nearby, and the walk from the car to the dock is incredibly short.
After freshening up at the hotel, we headed into downtown Sarnia for breakfast at Cromwell Grill. Sometimes a classic breakfast is exactly what you need before another day of exploring. You have to order their hashbrowns, trust me. They are worth making the trip alone and don’t forget to add onion!
From there, we wandered through the Downtown Sarnia Farmers’ Market, browsing the indoor and outdoor vendors. I bought a butter tart and some arancini, while Aaron picked up a blueberry basil scone from Flakery Bakery. Those treats disappeared pretty quickly.
Later, we slowed things down with a walk through Wawanosh Wetlands. It’s an easy trail that’s perfect for stretching your legs and enjoying a quieter side of the city.
We also stumbled across a huge community event at Valley Axe featuring outdoor games, live music, and an awesome scavenger hunt. I even managed to win a wine tasting while we were there!
More Great Things to Do in Point Edward & Sarnia
No trip to Point Edward feels complete without grabbing fries from Albert’s and enjoying them beneath the Blue Water Bridge. It’s one of those classic Ontario experiences that just feels like a must… and I love my fries.
For our final dinner, we headed back downtown to March Hare. Both my steak and Aaron’s wagyu burger absolutely hit the spot.
Ice Creamery had been recommended to us for its creative flavours, so we stopped there on our way back and ordered a scoop of blueberry lavender and a scoop of stroopwafel chai ice cream. Both were unique, delicious, and the perfect way to end the evening while walking back through the park.
Before heading home the next morning, we squeezed in a final walk through Canatara Park before stopping at Bean on a Mission for coffee and a muffin for the drive home. I have to admit, the walnut banana muffin was really delicious. We enjoyed the coffee so much that we bought some beans to bring home.
Why Visit Point Edward & Sarnia?
What surprised us most about this Point Edward and Sarnia weekend getaway was just how much we packed into two days. Between paddleboarding, exploring downtown Sarnia, discovering local restaurants, walking nature trails, and watching sunset beneath the Blue Water Bridge, there was always something to do without ever feeling rushed. We both were gushing over how much public waterfront access there was.
Whether you’re planning a couples getaway, a road trip with friends, or simply searching for new things to do in Sarnia and Point Edward, this waterfront destination offers the perfect mix of relaxation, great food, and outdoor adventure.
